About Us
Mid South Liver Alliance was formed in 2021 to serve Patients, Providers, Caregivers and Researchers in Kentucky, Tennessee, Arkansas, Alabama, Mississippi and Louisiana with education, advocacy and support for Chronic Liver Disease.
Liver Disease can occur in people of all ages and both sexes. While NAFLD/NASH, the non-alcohol-related fatty liver diseases, are the most common, there are other liver diseases.
On any given day, there are 737 Mid-Southerners waiting for a liver transplant.
About the Liver
The liver is the second largest organ in our body. Weighing in at a robust three pounds, it is about the shape and size of a football. One side is flat, and it sits just under the ribcage on the right side of your body.
The liver’s job is to help break down toxins and alcohols that enter our systems with each breath, bite of food, drink of fluids or that we rub onto our skin. Literally everything we eat, drink, breathe or absorb ends up in the liver to be processed.
Some of what the liver handles will be converted into energy to keep our bodies moving. Other substances are filtered out as toxins. Still other substances may be stored as fat.
